Scratches on your car’s paintwork are inevitable, but don’t worry—many can be repaired without a trip to the body shop! Here’s a straightforward guide to help you remove minor scratches and restore your car’s shine.
Before starting, examine the depth of the scratch. Light scratches, which only affect the clear coat, are much easier to fix at home. If you can’t feel the scratch with your fingernail, it’s likely a surface-level mark. Deeper scratches that penetrate the paint or primer may require professional repair.
For most scratch removal tasks, you’ll need:
Before addressing the scratch, thoroughly wash and dry the area to remove any dirt or debris that could cause further damage while you work. Use a soft microfiber towel to ensure the area is completely dry.
For light scratches, a fine/medium polish or cutting compound, Squeeze a small amount onto a clean microfibre cloth or applicator pad. If using a rubbing compound, be aware that it’s slightly abrasive, so follow the instructions carefully.
How to Apply:
After applying compound / polish, use a clean, dry microfibre towel to buff the area in circular motions. This helps to remove excess product and polish the surface, blending the scratch with the surrounding paint.
Once the scratch has been removed, it’s important to restore protection to the area. Apply a layer of car wax or sealant to the affected area to protect the paint and bring back its shine.
How to Apply:
After completing the process, inspect the area in natural light. If the scratch is still visible, you can repeat the steps above until the scratch is no longer noticeable. For deeper scratches, this process might reduce visibility but not eliminate them completely.
